Under-fire manager tips his next opponents to lift the trophy come next May because they are the reigning champions and their squad is even stronger than last year
The Gunners have picked up one point from their first two matches, whilst the Red Devils have claimed a maximum of six points after winning their two opening matches.
Wenger praised United’s start to the season as well as the strength of their squad, pointing out that in their 3-0 win over Tottenham, they had several big players available from the bench.
Wenger told Arsenal’s official website: “They are the favourites because they won it last year and they do not look weaker. It is up to us to make sure they do not win it.
“Of course [we believe we can get the three points]. We have been very close many times since 2006 and we beat them last year at home so I believe we can do it.
“They have regenerated quite well, compared to last year, and there are still some good, experienced weapons on the bench. Look at last Sunday, for example, when they made the changes they still had Berbatov, Giggs coming on, and Carrick and Park. I would not be surprised if they start against us. “
“They were quite good against Tottenham in the last game and they have started stronger than they usually do," he continued. "On the style of their play I feel they already look ready and fit.
“So it will be an interesting confrontation because we feel physically strong as well. Overall, I hope you will not be disappointed by the quality of the game. We go there to, of course, give absolutely everything.”
Wenger also moved to halt the worries of Gunners fans about their squad situation at the moment as he claims he is doing everything in his power to bring in reinforcements.
He continued: "I will try to strengthen the squad in depth because at the moment we are a bit short number-wise but if we get two or three players in we have the quality to challenge.
"I am anxious yes because I want to do it and I try everything to do it. But I am confident as well because we have some good young players who can make a big step very quickly.
“There is a chance [we could make no signings] because again we are dependent on the desire of the people who have the players to sell the players.”
